How Can Kids Go Green?

This post is labeled for kids, but this is really for anyone who wants to make change without cost. If you’re not in a position where you can instigate change on a large scale, you can still change the world for the better! All you have to do is care enough to live an environmentally conscious lifestyle and influence others to do the same. Believe it or not, doing that makes a huge difference!

The first thing you can do to help stop pollution is to learn about it. There are plenty of fun online games you can play (Click here), lots of articles about it (Click here to read the posts I’ve written about it), and tons of youtube videos that talk about pollution. As the saying goes, knowledge is power!

One of the most critical things to start doing from now on is to STOP LITTERING! I’ve said this so many times, and I’ll keep saying it until I see a change. If you’d like to learn why ending litter is so important, click here to see my post on the subject.

Another helpful lifestyle change you start is refusing single-use plastics and live a zero-waste lifestyle. This video shows options for low-budget ways to start living an eco friendly lifestyle, as well as long-term investments you can make. As intimidating as “reducing your environmental impact” sounds, it’s actually really simple. You can start today by refusing straws at restaurants (or investing in reusable straws if you need to), bringing your own containers for to-go food, turning the lights off when you leave the room, and starting small. Don’t just be careful what you buy, though, make sure you watch what you throw away too! Recycling plastic, paper, cardboard, and whatever else your local recycling facility accepts is vital. In fact, you can actually make profit off of recycling! The rules for this will be different wherever you live, so make sure to look them up before going any further. Speaking of looking things up…

One of the easiest (and absolutely free) things you can do to start improving the earth immediately is setting your default browser to Ecosia.com. It works just as well as google but it has one big plus: it plants trees! 80% of the profits they make go towards planting trees. The website walks you through the steps of making this your default browser and its super easy! This works with apple, PC, android, anything! It only takes about 45 searches to plant one tree, so you can help save the earth from the comfort of your own home.Ecosia is a search engine that plants trees every time you ...

If you have a little spare cash, there are a few relatively cheap things you can invest in. Instead of buying plastic water bottles, invest in a reusable water bottle and save money in the long run. (Make sure you buy one that’s stainless steel or BPA free, though! If you want to know why, click here) You can also buy beeswax food wraps to replace plastic wrap or reusable straws as reusable alternatives to plastic products.

If you don’t have any extra money but would still like to help save the world, invest your time instead. A quick internet search (using Ecosia, I hope) for conservation places to volunteer at can show you many options, or if you’re tech savvy you can start your own blog like me! Never underestimate the influence one person, even someone who isn’t an adult yet, can have. If you work hard and are passionate about what you do, you’ll be unstoppable.

Thank you so much for reading this post! You may not think that you can really make a difference, but you never know until you try! I’m only 14 years old and I’m already reaching people across the world through this blog. Even at home, I influence my family and encourage them to live a zero-waste lifestyle as well. I hope you’re encouraged by this post, and come back next week for a guest post by Elise from cleanconeyisland.wordpress.com.
